CE Spotlight - September/October

The Curriculum Enhancement (CE) program started the school year with some exciting events. Here is a quick overview of what happened in September and October.
  • 2nd grade students from Ms. Gibbs and Ms. Waddell’s classes took a field trip to the Mercer Slough in SE Bellevue. Students became “Wetland Naturalists” under the direction of staff from the Pacific Science Center. Together, they observed soil, plants and animals as they hiked the trails.
  • 3rd grade students took a field trip to the Salmon Hatchery in Issaquah. Students learned about the different types of salmon, toured the hatchery, and got to see salmon making their way through the historic fish ladder.
  • 5th grade students enjoyed an Orienteering field trip with Eric Bone from Meridian Geographics. Students worked in teams to find locations in Bride Trails State Park using a map and compass.

Upcoming for November/December

  • Kindergarten will have an at-school visit from the Toy Maker.
  • 1st grade will have an at-school visit from the Toy Maker and Kids Quest Museum.
  • 4th and 5th grades will take a field trip to MOHAI (Museum of History and Industry) in Seattle.
  • 5th grade will have an at-school visit about Internet Safety.
  • “One World Taiko Drum” will visit Cherry Crest in an all school assembly and performance.
All of these, and those yet to come, are funded by the Cherry Crest PTSA through the Walk-a-thon, Auction, and Read-a-thon. Thank you for your continued support.

Did you know? Through the generous donations of parents to the Cherry Crest PTSA, the Curriculum Enhancement team arranges over 50 presenters, field trips and special events that enhance the curriculum and make Cherry Crest an enriching experience for all students!

The Curriculum Enhancement (CE) Committee is charged with creating new and exciting learning opportunities for all students at Cherry Crest that expand grade level curriculum and District-wide objectives.

The committee works very hard to ensure that activities, visiting authors and field trips are fun, but more importantly, they tie directly to the BSD curriculum and enhance your child’s learning experience!

Everything CE does is teacher-driven; the teachers decide which experiences will best enhance the class’s curriculum.

All of the amazing curriculum-extending events are funded by the Cherry Crest PTSA through the Walkathon, Auction, Spring Readathon and other fundraising efforts. Without your support, these activities would not be possible.

Please make sure you are cleared to volunteer in the classrooms and school events. Check with your teacher to make sure you are approved to volunteer. To learn more about how to complete a volunteer form & background clearance, visit here. Please allow 48 hours for your paperwork to be approved.

Estimated 2019-2020 CE Events By Grade:

Events are not listed in any particular order and some committees are still working to finalize plans. Grade-specific updates and volunteer opportunities will be provided throughout the year. Please contact your teacher or CE Rep for more information on how to help.

MISSION

The Curriculum Enhancement (CE) Committee members work with teachers to research and schedule activities, performers, and speakers that expand grade level curriculum. The benefits of the Curriculum Enhancement program to the students and the school are immeasurable.

HOW

ALL CE activities are teacher driven. The CE Committee meets with grade level teaching teams throughout the year to identify those opportunities that make sense and bring value for the teachers and the students. The grade level CE Coordinator works to support the teachers by researching, coordinating and scheduling activities to develop the current district curriculum, seeking information from members of the education, art, business and parent community.

FUNDING

Parent and community support of the Cherry Crest PTSA fundraisers (Walkathon, Read-a-thon and Annual Auction) provide 100% financing for all CE activities!

BACKGROUND CHECK

Parents and guardians each need to register as a verified volunteer with the district before participating in the event.
