As we continue our Fundraising efforts this spring with a goal of raising an additional $80,000 to support Cherry Crest Elementary (CCE), we want to introduce someone whose story is a testament to perseverance, education, and community—our incredible Vice Principal, Amy Chu.

Amy’s journey to education wasn’t a straight path. Born to Korean immigrant parents, she grew up in Federal Way, WA, balancing the expectations of two cultures. Her parents ran a Korean video store, catering to other immigrants, and English wasn’t spoken at home. School was a place of independence—her parents, working long hours, couldn’t attend parent-teacher conferences or help with homework. But that independence shaped her into the educator she is today.
“I had to figure out school on my own,” Amy says.
“I learned how to navigate a system that wasn’t built for students and families like me. That experience drives everything I do in education—I want students to feel seen, supported, and capable of success.”
Her love of learning took time to develop. She struggled with reading but excelled in math, eventually attending college as a first-generation student. It wasn’t until a public education class in her freshman year that she realized her true calling.
“I started thinking critically about why some students succeed while others don’t. Why do barriers exist, and how can we change them? I knew then I wanted to be part of the system to help be a part of the solution.”
Today, Amy is passionate about making sure every student at Cherry Crest feels connected to their school, teachers, and community.
“School isn’t just about academics—it’s about feeling like you belong,” she says.
“I want every student to know they have an adult here who sees them, knows them, and cares about them.”

On the Power of the PTSA
For Amy, the PTSA is a critical bridge between home and school.
“Families are everything. A student’s first sense of belonging comes from their family, and we want to extend that into school,” she explains.
“The PTSA connects parents, staff, and students, bringing everyone together for a shared purpose—making Cherry Crest Elementary the best it can be.”
She’s been blown away by the PTSA’s impact.
“I’ve worked in schools where PTSA involvement was minimal. Here, it’s completely different. The dedication of our families is incredible. And what’s even more meaningful is the model it sets for our kids—giving back to your community matters.”
Why Give to Cherry Crest?
“Every dollar donated goes toward something meaningful,” Amy says.
“The PTSA funds free field trips, after-school enrichment programs, and student support services. It helps us provide the supervision and social-emotional development students need. It makes our school safer, more engaging, and more inclusive.”

And, of course, it makes space for the fun stuff—School Dances, the Variety Show, Popsicle Socials—moments that create lifelong memories for students.
“Cherry Crest isn’t just a school. It’s a community. And that’s what we’re building with every donation—opportunities, experiences, and a place where every child belongs.”
If you see Amy in the halls, say hi— she’s training for her first half marathon, so she’ll be ready to race students at the Walkathon on May 9th.

Let’s get ready, Cherry Crest family, for an amazing Walkathon this May, where we’re not only getting healthy, but we’re also raising money for an amazing cause – OUR STUDENTS. See you on the track!
